Wayne's Story
Update 7 July 2019
Enjoying retirement! Still engaged with Veterans issues and Professional Engineering activities but also spending time pursuing the many things I have set aside over the past 30 years for retirement. In addition, we are preparing to receive our first great-grandchild (a girl) later this month. Overall, life is moving at a more relaxed pace and I'm enjoying it thoroughly!
New information
I retired from working on 29 Sep 2018, but have yet to slow down. I'm still very involved in Veterans' issues, so the run-up to Nov 11 was hectic. Since that time a number of family issues have kept me busy, and on 6 Dec 2018 we welcomed our fifth grandchild. The grandkids certainly keep us hopping! We're looking forward to the New Year to really get into retirement mode!
Cheers!
Life
After LRHS, I went to Royal Military College in Kingston, graduating with a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering. That grew to the Master's level at the Royal Military College of Science in the United Kingdom in 1991. I did toy with the idea of pursuing a MBA at Queen's, but things didn't work out.
In the Armed Forces, I have retired as an Engineer and have served throughout Canada with the exception of the Yukon, and had quite a few tours overseas - the last one in Bosnia (again) from May 2000 to June 2001. Work kept me extremely busy - I seem to have had a knack for solving big, complex problems, so lots of folks kept knocking on my door to do more. "Success has its own rewards (punishments?)."
I'm happily married to a wonderful lady from Nova Scotia, and we have two girls and one boy (Jennifer, Lauren and Donald) - and two grandsons (Martin Jr and Maddux). We've been in Ottawa now for quite some time, and it looks like this will be the permanent home. 'Pets' include 2 horses, 3 cats, 1 African pygmy hedgehog and 100 gals of goldfish (who like to be petted - really!)
While I wasn't really looking to retire, now that I'm officially a disabled veteran, the Canadian Forces chose to release me, with my last day of work being 7 September 2007. In retirement, my plan was to make the 'honey-do' list my full-time job for a while - certainly my wife Deborah has been patient enough over the years - and I have a few pet projects of my own. But before my retirement leave ended in October 2008, I tested the job market with the Public Service, but decided not to pursue full-time paid employment for the time being - I have found volunteer work to be more fun and rewarding.
To those ends, I now spend one day a week at the Terry Fox Canadian Youth Centre in Ottawa, on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada, providing a Peace module to about 100 students aged 14 to 17 years from across Canada who visit the capital for a week. While this is far and away the highlight of my week, I also enjoy the many aspects of Freemasonry (which accounts for much of the remainder of my time).
Ah, but if I though I was done with working for a living, I was mistaken. Just before Christmas 2009, I received a phone call from a former Canadian Forces colleague, asking me to fill a vacancy in the Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), Parliamentary Precinct Branch, helping with building engineering and maintenance management of these historic edifices. How could I say no?
Now, if you've read this far, you might just be motivated enough to drop me a line. Cheers!

25 Oct 2008 - 3 Jan 2010- Retired = busier than heck, but really keen to reconnect with friends and acquaintances. Please drop me a line!
4 Jan 2010 - Present - Back in Government service with Public Works and Government Services Canada, Parliamentary Precinct Branch, providing building engineering and maintenance services - in addition to keeping up with all of the previous volunteer work. No rest for the wicked, eh? But I've always time for friends trying to reconnect!
27 Feb 10 - Where'd the time go? My apologies to all who may have tried to contact me lately. My job with PWGSC has gone nuts, with me there from dawn to dusk. It's easier to get my attention there at (Wayne.MacCulloch at pwgsc.gc.ca - blast Classmates restrictions!) than anywhere else. Looking at my earlier comment (4 Jan 10), I must be awfully wicked....but still having bucketloads of fun!
16 Oct 10 - Still on Parliament Hill in reconstruction of historic buildings, still busy like crazy, but have found time to add a couple of things, like President of the Colonel John Gardam Chapter (Ottawa) of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP). As such, I'll be part of the group presenting the first poppy to the new Governor General on October 25 at Rideau Hall.
Sadly, our African pygmy hedgehog, Jewel, passed away this summer, but the rest of the menagerie is fine - and the fish keep breeding on their own!
My son joined the Canadian Forces a year and a half ago, and is now stationed in 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa, Ont, on standby for Afghanistan. I'm only a little envious....
4 Jan 11 - Accepted a new post in the Department of National Defence, bringing the Department's scientific research facilities into the 21st century. Travel, new friends and long-standing colleagues, along with complex and unsusual challenges - who could ask for more?
